Schedule - PostgreSQL Development Conference 2024

Pushing boundaries with extensions, for extensions

Date: 2024-05-29
Time: 09:00–09:50
Room: Canfor(1600)
Level: Advanced

The Postgres extension ecosystem is growing, and the capabilities of Postgres are growing with it.

But just as the extensions are pushing the boundaries of what's possible with Postgres, we've come to a point where we need to consider how much the extensions need to push the boundaries of Postgres' extension harnessing.

Let's talk about the limitations and constraints of the current extension support system, where it can go, and how we can work around this today.

We will dive into these topics:

  • Versioning: the good, the bad and the missing parts.
  • Robustness: just how fragile are extensions?
  • Coverage: hooks, background workers and other Postgres subsystems
  • Provisioning: delivery, installation and upgrade experience.
